The Test of English as a Foreign Language

This exam is testing the North American English Proficiency, and is accpeted by 4.400 American 2-4 year Colleges and Universities.

Paper Based Toefl (PBT)

Test takers are given a tesbook and a paper answer sheet to record their responses. PBT has 3 sections and a writing part:

Listening Comprehension: examines the ability to understand spoken English
Structure and Written Expression: examines the ability to understand standard grammar and written English
Reading Comprehension: examines the ability to read and understand general English
Test of Written English: examines how the test taker organizes and supports his ideas in written English

Computer Based Toefl (CBT)

Test takers can take it in istitutions or testing centers operated by Prometric. CBT has 4 sections:

Listening Comprehension: examines the ability to understand spoken English
Structure and Written Expression: examines the ability to understand standard grammar and written English
Reading Comprehension: examines the ability to read and understand general and academic English which is required for American Universities.
Test of Written English: examines how the test taker organizes and supports his ideas in written English.

Internet Based Toefl (iBT): Next Generation Toefl

Will be launched after September 2005 in the United States first,

Will be delivered via internet and will capture speech and responses.
