COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

FIRST TERM

 

English Grammar I

This course  aims at developing the linguistic competence of the students in English, teaching the basic linguistic structures and creating an awareness of the relation between the linguistic structures and lexical items and the meanings conveyed through the linguistic structures.

 

Speaking Skills I

This course aims at developing the listening and speaking skills of the students through a variety of activities, such as reading authentic texts, public speaking, listening to poetry, which are all carried out with the active participation of the students in an interactive manner.

 

Reading Skills I

This course aims at developing the reading comprehension skills of the students with authentic English texts and providing them with techniques that will enable them to establish the relations among lexical items, structures and meanings.

 

Writing Skills I

The course aims at developing the skills of paragraph analysis, outlining, summarizing, interpreting and answering test questions through all of these skills at paragraph level. The structure and the types of paragraphs and longer texts, the technical aspects of written materials in English are studied in depth.

 

Turkish I: Written Composition

In this course the importance of language and the relation between language and culture are discussed after the basic definitions of language in its written and oral forms. The punctuation marks, grammatical acceptability, the structures and principles in written composition are studied with the help of authentic extracts in Turkish from a large variety of text types.

 

Atatürk’s Principles and the History of Revolution I

 

Introduction to Teaching Profession

This course introduces the specific qualities and principles of the teaching profession with reference to classroom and school contexts, alternative perspectives in education. The social, psychological, philosophical and historical foundations of the educational system are discussed in the example of Turkish education.

 

SECOND TERM

 

 English Grammar II

Continuation of English Grammar I. The course develops the students’ skills of analyzing linguistic structures at text and context levels, acquaints the students with the techniques of text production with respect to the basic skills of recognizing text type formats and the linguistic structures in their original contexts.

 

 Speaking Skills II

Continuation of Speaking Skills I. The course is carried out with the activities that develop the listening and speaking skills of the students in English. The students are expected to present the speeches they compose in keeping with the basic principles of public speaking.

  

Reading Skills II

Continuation of Reading Skills I. The course develops the skills of comprehension and analysis of authentic texts in English at a higher level of structural and conceptional complexity.

  

Writing Skills II

Continuation of Writing Skills I. The course develops the skills of comparing and contrasting, explaining, arguing through written composition by using the earlier background on paragraph and composition writing skills.

  

Turkish II: Oral Composition

Continuation of Turkish I: Written Composition. The course aims at developing the speaking and presentation skills in Turkish with the use of correct pronunciation and intonation. The background in different types and techniques of public speech is used as a reference.

  

Atatürk’s Principles and the History of Revolution II

  

School Experience I

This course acquaints the teacher trainees with the school atmosphere in the first year of their  training. The trainees are expected to observe the schools as a whole with the teachers, management and the students to report back to their instructors.

 THIRD TERM

 

Advanced Reading Skills

The course develops reading comprehension skills on a variety of text types and styles providing the students with the necessary background in the strategies of synthesis, lexical choice and stylistic awareness.

 

Introduction to English Literature I

The course develops the basic skills of literary analysis and criticism along with the introduction of basic literary terms, literary trends and movements, important literary figures and their prominent works.

 

Language Acquisition

The course introduces, analyses and exemplifies the theories of language acquisition in L1 and L2. The phases of language development and acquisition are applied to the specific cases of foreign language learning and teaching processes.

 

Computer Programming

 

Turkish Phonetics and Morphology

The course gives the necessary skills required for the linguistic analysis and the teaching of phonetic and morphemic structures in Turkish. Contemporary linguistic approaches are introduced and applied to the descriptive analysis of Turkish phonetics and morphology.

 

Development and Learning

Human development from a large variety of perspectives (cognitive, social, psychological, ethical, physical, etc.) are discussed. Approaches and processes in learning are studied with respect to the individual differences and styles of learning.

  

FOURTH TERM

 

Advanced Writing Skills

The skills required in research and academic writing are introduced as part of professional writing. The student compositions are evaluated and assessed. The strategies of assessment and grading in writing are discussed.

 

Introduction to English Literature II

Continuation of English Literature I. Further study based on the earlier background in literary trends and periods. Literary analysis and criticism skills are applied to literary texts with higher level of complexity.

  

Approaches in English Language Training

The approaches, methods and techniques in English language teaching are introduced from the past to the present. Grammar-Translation Method, Direct Method, Audio-lingual Method, Communicative Approach and Natural Approach are analyzed and exemplified.

   

Introduction to Linguistics I

The course aims at creating an awareness of language as a dynamic system. The components of this system are introduced along with the basic terms and concepts used in linguistic analysis. The relation between linguistics and language teaching is discussed.

 

Turkish Syntax and Semantics

The analysis and the description of Turkish syntactic structures with linguistic methods, adaptation of materials for the teaching of Turkish syntax in accordance with modern approaches in semantics.

 

Educational Planning and Evaluation

Basic concepts and processes in educational programs, curriculum and syllabus designs, teaching methods and strategies, material development, testing and assessment, evaluation processes are introduced.

  

FIFTH TERM

 

Introduction to Linguistics II

This course aims at acquainting the students with the processes of linguistic performance and the relation between linguistic processes and language teaching. It also develops the awareness with respect to the social function of language.

 

Short Story Analysis and Teaching

The course introduces the place and the basic specifications of short story as a genre in literature. The strategies for the analysis and the teaching of short stories are studied on short story samples from English and American literatures.

 

Translation: English-Turkish

Translation theories are introduced and exemplified with reference to the relation between the fields of translation and language teaching. The course provides practice with a large variety of text types and styles.

 

Micro Teaching Techniques I

Teaching methods and techniques for the teaching of specific subjects and language items are introduced as part of the general teaching processes. The course books in the field are evaluated with a critical point of view in terms of their content of  micro teaching practice.

 

Teaching Technologies and Materials Development

Important aspects of a variety of teaching technologies, their place and use in the process of teaching, the development of teaching materials (worksheets, transparencies, slides, video and computer-based materials) are introduced.

 SIXTH TERM

 

Research Methods

The scientific research methods and techniques are introduced and exemplified. The students are encouraged and expected to carry out small scale researches that are evaluated by their instructors.

 

Teaching Young Learners

Learning strategies of children and the strategies developed in L1 are discussed with reference to the teaching of English to young learners. Methods and techniques such as drama, songs and visual materials are introduced.

 

Novel Analysis and Teaching

The course introduces the place and the basic specifications of novel as a genre in literature. The strategies and techniques for the  analysis and teaching of novel are exemplified with a variety of sample novels from English and American literatures.

  

Classroom Management

The social and psychological factors influencing students’ behaviors, classroom context and group interaction, management of a classroom in accordance with the principles, effective use of time in classroom, motivation, communication, problems and solutions.

SEVENTH TERM

 

 Testing and Assessment

Types of testing and techniques of preparing tests for different purposes are introduced. Evaluation and analysis techniques, statistical calculations, question preparation processes are discussed in detail.

 

Drama Analysis and Teaching

The course introduces the place and the basic specifications of drama as a genre in literature. The strategies and techniques for the analysis and teaching of drama are exemplified with a variety of sample dramas from English and American literatures.

 

Materials Evaluation and Adaptation

The evaluation and adaptation of course materials in English Language Teaching is the focus of the course. Coursebook samples are analyzed and evaluated for the purpose of practice; new drills are suggested and designed.  

  

Coursebook Analysis

The coursebooks used in the field, with the approval of National Ministry of Education are analyzed with a critical point of view in terms of their appropriateness to the existing teaching curriculum. The content of the coursebooks are evaluated with a scientific set of criteria.

 

School Experience II

School Experience includes the observations and practices carried out in a school under the guidance of the course instructor. The students are expected to report to the instructor based on their observations inside the classrooms with regard to the techniques used such as instruction strategies, handling of the course material…etc.

EIGHTH TERM

  

Translation: Turkish- English

The translation of text samples and authentic materials from Turkish into English with reference to the use of translation in language teaching is the focus of the course. The course develops an awareness of contrastive discourse and language use which is reflected directly in the translational competence.

  

Poetry Analysis and Teaching

The course introduces the place and the basic specifications of poetry as a genre in literature. The strategies and techniques for the  analysis and teaching of poetry are exemplified with a variety of sample poems from English and American literatures.

 

Guidance and Counseling

The course provides the students with a background in the use of psychological guidance and counseling in education. The principles of counseling and the processes of guidance are introduced to the teacher trainees. 

 

Teaching Practice

Teaching Practice is carried out for one full day a week ( minimum 12 weeks ). The students, teacher trainees are expected to observe and present courses at a school in accordance with their background in language teaching methods and techniques. Part of the course is carried out as a two-hour seminar with the instructor.
