A Short Role-play written by Prep-year students of Pertevniyal Anatolian High School in 1997
(One
day Lucy is wailking in the forest. She hurts her foot)
Lucy
: Oh ! Damn....
(
Thomas sees her and helps)
Thomas
:What’s the matter miss?
L:
Oh ! I think I hurt my my foot , I can’t walk
T:
Can I help you?
L:
Yes. Please.....
T:
What are you doing here, Miss?
L:
My name is Lucy, Lucy Loxley. I wanted to see the forest.
T:
I see. Well, I am Thomas, Thomas Mawbary. I am a farmer. I think you are Sir
Roger Loxley’s daughter.
L:
Yes I am. Do you know him ?
T:
Everybody knows him, he’s very rich. But I haven’t seen you before. Where
have you been ?
L:
I was in the United States. I was studying Music there.
(They
came to the gate of Lucy’s house)
T:
Well, Would you like me to take you into the house?
L:
No, thanks a lot, Mr. Mowbray. I’ll call my servant.
T:
Please call me Tom, Shall I see you again?
L:
I don’t know... Maybe... Thanks again.
T:
I’ll be waiting for you at the same time next Tuesday.
(Lucy
doesn’t answer and gets into the house)

(
Lucy feels lonely and remembers Tom’s invitation. She feels happy and hurries
into the forets. Tom is waiting for her.)
T:
Oh! At last. I was about to lose my hope.
L:
I was just just passing through the forest.
T:
Let me show you around. But before that I want to tell you something .
(
he stops,Looks into her eyes, Lucy is shy)
Well
, I want to say...... (he stops again)
L:
Yes, go on.
T:
I think , I love you Lucy.
(
Lucy wants to say something , but Tom interrupts her.)
T:
We are very different , but i can give you my love , I want to marry you.
L:
I have also thought about you, Tom. You are very kind to me, and you have
something what money can’t buy . But my father won't let us marry each other.
T:
I’ll go and talk to him.I will tell him how much I love you. He will
understand me.
L:
Look, I must go now. Wait for me here next Tuesday, ok?
T:
I am looking forward to seeing you again , Lucy..
(Lucy
goes back home. Her father and Lord Griston are gambling. She says Good evening
to them and goes to her room.)

(Sir
Roger and Lord Griston are at the table, gambling)
Sir
Roger : Uh ! I lost again ...
Lord
Griston : (grinnes) Yes, fellow, you lost your everything.
S
: Once more please. Give me a chance.
L:
Well, you know you have nothing to gamble for, but your daughter. I will give
you everything if you promise to arrange our marriage.
S:
But, you.....
L:
Yes I am too old for her. But I have alot of money too. I can buy her
everything. Clothes, jewels, Palaces...
(Lord
Griston stands up. He adds he will wait for his promis... Sir Roger doeasn’t
say anything, he sits still)

Lycy is in her room. Sir Roger knocks at the door)
L:
Come in, please...
S:
Hi , dear. How are you today ?
L:
I am OK dad. But I’m a bit bored. I ant to go out for a walk in the forest.
S:
OK, but before you go I want to talk to you .
L:
About what?
S:
About your marriage. You know ý am old . I don’t have much time. And you’ve
already finished your school. I think it’s time to get married.
(Lucy
doesn’t answer. Sir Roger goes on )
Lucy,
you know Lord Griston . I am .... well,.... he wants to marry you...
L:
(Stands up , she is surpirsed) Who? Me? Lord Griston and me? But he is too old
and ugly, dad. Can’t you see this? (she starts crying)
S:
Oh! Lucy Don’t be silly. He si
very rich and I have already promised him to arrange
your marriage.
(Lucy
sits down Crying)
L:
No, no , never. I’ll never marry him.
S:
You have to do this for me, Lucy. He offered me a lot of money and I accepted
it..........
